The IMI Ebola+ programme was launched in response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak that started in western Africa in 2014. The comprehensive programme contributes to efforts to tackle a wide range of challenges in Ebola research, including vaccines development, clinical trials, storage and transport, and diagnostics. It is hoped that the programme, which complements work being carried out with the support of other funding bodies, will help to make a difference in the current and future outbreaks. In addition to Ebola, the programme will also address related diseases, such as Marburg. Eight projects, with a total budget of over €200 million, were selected for funding under the first Ebola+ Call for proposals. A second open Call on Ebola and related diseases was launched in December 2015 and resulted in three projects.

The project EbolaMoDRAD, Ebola virus: modern approaches for developing bedside rapid diagnostics, coordinated by FoHM, was part of the first Ebola+ Call from IMI. It aimed to develop and deliver rapid and bedside diagnostic tool(s) that will significantly increase our capacity to handle the current Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa and also future outbreak in within a 24 month-period. During this project, the consortium achieved to develop lateral flow and isothermal Recombinase Polymerase Amplification assays (LFD-RPA) that could be used in laboratory and in the field for rapid diagnostic of Ebola infection. In addition, an lateral flow test with a sensitivity of 89 % and a specificity of 98% have been developed for field diagnosis.

VHFMoDRAD is built on the successful achievements of IMI’s EbolaMoDRAD project and is going to the next level by including several other haemorrhagic fever viruses. VHFMoDRAD project is part of this second call on Ebola and is integrated to IMI Ebola + Programme.
